Superb service recognised at City’s Neighbourhood Watch Awards

The annual event this weekend recognised the invaluable contribution of Neighbourhood Watches (NW) to the safety of communities. Four group and eight individual awards were given at the prestigious event.

‘The volunteers who are part of neighbourhood watches are an integral part of keeping our communities safer and play an important role in keeping criminals away. The awards are a token of our appreciation for the work they do and a salute to their bravery and dedication. They support our enforcement departments and help us build stronger neighbourhoods,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

In September this year, the City called for nominations from members of the public to nominate accredited individual NW members or groups who have shown exceptional performance and dedication in community safety and upliftment.

There was an overwhelming response to the call and the adjudication panel carefully reviewed the motivations, supporting evidence and feedback and for the first time, there are two categories with dual winners.

Below are the winners in the group and individual categories.

Group awards:

Neighbourhood Watch of the Year: Fernpark, Brackenfell
Situational Crime Prevention Award: Edgemead
Social Responsibility Award: Strand
Courage in Action Award: Loswill Park, Strand

Individual awards:

Neighbourhood Watch Member of the Year: Juan Fouche (Victoria NW)
Organisational Excellence Award: Pierre Fourie (Pinelands NW)
Mobilisers of the Year (tie): Saleem Orrie (Vanguard Welcome Estate NW) and Heide Jean Ebrahim (Pinelands NW)
Inspiration of the Year: Carl Gersbach (Strand NW)
Crime Fighter of the Year: Bandile Gcuwa (Langa Safety Patrols NW)
Courage in Action Award (tie): Debra Pietersen (Edgemead NW) and Pierre Fourie (Pinelands NW)

‘While we’ve given some awards, all the members of these versatile organisations are winners for doing their part and contributing to public safety. Their efforts do not go unnoticed, and we commend them all for their passion and dedication,’ added Alderman Smith.
